• Alberta Chooses Canada

Had this referendum in Alberta taken place two years ago, the outcome might have been very different. After all, Canada was never truly a single country. It was merely a collection of provinces, or sub-states, that shared the collective name "Canada", yet these entities imposed import tariffs on one another and, in some cases, even maintained distinct languages and cultures. While the concept of Canada may have resonated with the rest of the world, it never felt entirely real to those living within it.

Consequently, when the call for an independent Alberta emerged a little over two years ago, it found a receptive audience. Conservatives in the province viewed independence as a potential stepping stone toward eventually becoming part of Trump’s America.

It was Trump himself who shattered this dream held by Alberta’s conservatives. Trump believed he was helping them by orchestrating the collapse of the Canadian economy, effectively laying the groundwork for the United States to absorb Canada.

What Trump failed to account for was a man like Carney, the person who ultimately saved Canada.

Had the Conservative leader at the time, Pierre Poilievre, managed to become Canada’s Conservative Prime Minister, the plan might well have succeeded. Instead, Trump’s actions incensed enough Canadians that the Conservatives were swept away in the subsequent elections, an outcome that would have been impossible before Trump’s intervention. Although Carney was largely unknown and certainly not popular in Canada, he understood the public’s anger toward Trump and managed to channel it effectively. This proved disastrous for Pierre Poilievre, who had consistently spoken of Trump in glowing terms.

Alberta’s current stance demonstrates that Canada has evolved into a genuine nation. Carney deserves a statue for that.
