There was a terrible 'wild' situation at a military training
base in Wainwright, Alberta this week.
They were doing some sort of manouvers in an open grassy area
and there was an existing grass fire they knew about not too
far away but it was not seen as a threat. Then it suddenly took
off and I believe the current totals are 7 soldiers dead and 36
wounded, close to 20 in critical condition.
When I heard about it I wondered how something like that is
even possible but as it turned out, when the fire took off, it
was moving across the ground at close to 60 MPH, so it
obviously could not be out-run.. Unbelievable..
I also heard, and saw some footage, about that. That is unbelievable and very tragic. The winds must have picked up and started moving the fire quickly in their direction. The news we heard here was that there was also an explosion, or multiple explosions, that may have been related to what the troops were training with. If that is true, and based on the new info you've provided, I wonder if the fire caught them and set the explosives off before they could do anything about it. :(
Also saw one report that suggested the explosions could have been natural gas related, as there are also multiple pipelines/resources in that area.
